My Background
I earned my PhD in the English department at the Ohio State University, where I studied folklore, literature, and the places where they intersect. My areas of interest include fairy tales and their adaptations, 19th-century literature, folk narrative, disability studies, speculative fiction, supernatural folklore, and queer theory.
I also hold a BA in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude, and an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies: Folklore from George Mason University. I have studied abroad at Oxford University: Mansfield College, where I was fully matriculated in the tutorial system for a year, and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Learn With Me
The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic is an award-winning online school that offers courses on fairy tales & folklore.
Hi, we're Sara and BRittanY!
Brittany I and met in our MA program over a decade ago. We're both introverts and were much shyer then than we are now, but somehow we managed one of those instant "YOU ARE MY PEOPLE" connections. We've been collaborating (and eating chocolate and laughing like drunken pixies) ever since.
About
The Carterhaugh School of Folklore & The Fantastic
In 2016, we founded The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, a (mostly) online school. We give lectures and teach courses on fairy tales, folklore, witches, writing, and more. Basically, your ultimate fantasy college courses (for a fraction of the price.) We’re both serious academics, but we also think learning should be joyful, fun, and relevant. We’ll help you see classic tales with fresh eyes, introduce you to stories you’ve never heard before, and welcome you into a community of magic-makers who love this stuff as much as you do. Instead of tests, we’ll give you quests that bring fairy tales and folklore into your own life. Give us an hour, and we’ll show you how an old tale can shine light into your home, your relationships, and your own sense of self.
So that’s what Carterhaugh is, but it doesn’t quite capture what it feels like. You know those magic schools you’ve always read about? Carterhaugh is the online version. One of our recent students told us that “finding Carterhaugh School is like stumbling into Rivendell.” We think she’s right.
In October 2019, our school won the Dorothy Howard Award from the American Folklore Society’s Education Section, recognizing our excellence and our commitment to sharing folklore with a global audience!"
